So, what is Bubble Tea, where did it come from and why is it so popular?

what is bubble tea

Bubble Tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980’s and is taking the country by storm. First making its way into America, and more recently here in the UK. Typically, the tea is comprised of a tea base with flavoured syrups and popping boba or tapioca added. The customisable options are endless with people able to create drinks that match their own personal tastes.

Put simply, Bubble Tea is a tea-based drink (either with or without milk) with added flavoured syrups and “topped” with tapioca, jellies or popping boba. While normally the beverage is enjoyed cold, it is also an option to have it hot or even frozen.

As a nation of tea lovers, Bubble Tea holds a special appeal to consumers within the UK, and we have seen the market expand everywhere you look. The trend has a special appeal for younger generations where the possibility of customisation, and the visual appeal have become increasingly popular across social media.

What do I need to make bubble tea?

what do you need for a bubble tea?

Making Bubble Tea is easy, and you can make it at home, or visit a specialised shop for more variety. From a business point of view, if you have a kettle and plenty of ice you have the basics you need to start. While you have an option of adding specialised machines to your set up to make the process more seamless, these are not an essential purchase for your business.

how to make bubble tea

All you need is tea, black or green is most popular, but you can use fruit tea or oolong, your choice of flavour, a complimenting topping and ice. If you are making milk tea you will also need milk powder or fresh milk/milk alternative. Simply brew your tea, add the flavouring and ice to cool, then the topping and more ice to fill the cup. Special wide straws make it possible to drink the toppings with the tea, ensuring you get bursts of flavour as you enjoy your drink.

Popular Bubble Tea Flavours

While the options for your bubble tea flavour are endless, there are some flavours that are more traditional and some that are rising in popularity.

Milk tea with brown sugar syrup and black tapioca pearls is the most traditional option when it comes to your bubble tea. The brown sugar syrup makes for a slightly thicker sweet drink, which can be styled to create patterns on the cup, while the tapioca adds a chewier texture with an almost liquorice like flavour.

With fruit syrups the options are endless. You can add milk to a strawberry tea to make almost a strawberry milkshake flavour, and paired with blueberry popping boba will give you a colourful drink that is almost insta worthy.

You can also combine flavours to create special themed drinks for seasonal activities, for example, passion fruit syrup and peach bubbles will bring the taste of summer to any menu.
